Project Life - I'm taking the plunge!

Well I gave it a go last year and I only made it to week 3 before quitting. But I decided to take the plunge after seeing all the fabulous Project Life goodies floating around. Becky Higgins first got my attention with her amazing products from Jessica Sprague. During week two I discovered Splendid Finns fabulous journaling card collections (coming next week!). Design House Digital also has many designers (such as Karla Dudley and Robyn Meierotto) also creating many greats products that can be used for Project Life!

What is project life? Well, it can be many things. You can make a double page spread every week documenting what you did - and can be as simple or complex as you'd like! It's a great way to record the simple things in life. Moments that you want to remember but may not have scrapped otherwise. For now, I've decided to just do a single page for each week, but allowing myself doubles if I have a crazy busy week. Don't have time? Just do a layout or two a month! So here are my layouts for the month of January. I'll start off with my title page for the album. (note: click on image for credits and sharper image).

So jump in and try it out! Make it as simple as you'd like. I started with Becky Higgins Templates and added Karla Dudley's Pocket Protectors to each template. I'll probably stick to two or three templates all year to make it simple. I saved the original template with the protectors so I can just add the photos and cards each week. Less time consuming!

Hybrid Christmas Light Covers Tutorial

Hybrid Light Covers – 20 Days of Christmas

December is here and it’s time to decorate!

I hope you are feeling festive today because I have a really fun way to decorate your indoor lights! We will be creating Christmas Light Covers! I originally saw the idea for a Halloween theme on Pinterest and thought it would be perfect to use for Christmas as well!

So here we go! It’s really easy! The first thing you need to do is pick a bold colored Christmas kit – I chose Shannon Hegartys’s Peppermint Papers from Design House Digital because, well, they looked so yummy!

Additional supplies:
*small paper cups (I used dixie-type cups)
* a string of Christmas lights
* craft knife
* scissors
* black marker
* double sided adhesive

I used PSE 7 for this tutorial. So here’s what you do:

Choose three different patterns from your paper stash.

Open a letter size document (8.5×11) and drag the first pattern to it.

Save as a .JPG and print the image.

Repeat above for the other two patterns.

You should have three sheets printed. This will make 12 cup covers. If you would like a longer strand of 24, then print out three more sheets.

Take one of the small cups and very carefully peel it apart. Start with the rim at the top and uncurl it and then carefully rip the seam. You should have a nice curved template of the side of the cup. Discard the bottom piece. See photo below.

By tracing your template close together on the back of each sheet you should be able to trace four cup covers.

Cut out each one using scissors.

Each cover will fit very snuggly around the paper cup. Use strong double sided adhesive to seal.

Now slice a tiny X on the bottom of each cup using a sharp craft knife. This will allow you to feed the light bulb through the cup cover so don’t make the X too big as you want a snug fit.

Now just string up your adorable light covers on a window or fire place mantel!

Digital Scrapbooking Day 2011

It’s that time of year again! Digital Scrapbooking Day is upon us and we always love a good reason to have a good sale and some chats! This DSD is no exception. Here are all the happenings this week and weekend:

Everything in the DHD shop is 25% off! Everyone loves a deal and now is a great time to get all your wishlist items that you’ve been waiting for! Sale ends November 6th.

My favorite part of these events is the blog hop! This DSD we are having 2 awesome blog hops. The designers are giving away mini kits and the decorators are giving away quick pages made with the designer’s mini kits. I’ve seen all the designs and they are AMAZING so you will not want to miss this! The Designer Blog Hop is on Thursday Nov. 3rd and the Decorator Blog Hop is on Friday Nov. 4th. Visit the DHD blog on both of those days for more information.

Because DSD is all about scrapbooking, we are giving away prizes to random gallery posters. Post a layout or project in the DHD gallery for your chance to win one of the following prizes:

That’s right, we’re looking to add more Decorators, and we’re very excited!
Are you a digital or hybrid papercrafter? Would you like to receive the latest and greatest digital kits released at Design House Digital for free? We thought so! This is your chance to become a part of the amazing Decorator team at DHD! What does a Decorator do, you ask?
Digital Team:

Create at least four projects featuring the Design House Digital designs. You can choose which kits you’d like to use, and you’ll receive these kits for free!

Hybrid Team:

Create two hybrid projects per month using Design House Digital designs, and post them on our blog.

All Decorators:

Post projects created in the Design House Digital gallery, plus any other galleries you are active in (minimum of 1) and your personal blog.
Participate in the DHD message board and gallery regularly.
Host a challenge once every three months, on a sign-up basis.
Be willing to sign up periodically for additional blog posts, challenges, chats, etc.

Journaling with SONG...

Welcome back everyone! So let’s get right to the next lesson shall we? I’ll admit it, I’m no poet. Not even close. So when creating a layout I often try to write something meaningful but sometimes that ends up falling flat. That is why I have a secret weapon I use when I need to find the ‘perfect’ saying to capture the moment! I’m going to share it with you, so get your pencils and notebooks out for today’s lesson and write this down: Song Lyrics.
Think about it, you have thousands of poetic and witty words at your disposal! Here’s an example of part of a Billy Joel song lyric which I used to describe how I was feeling about my daughter. In Just the Way You Are the lyrics said it better than I ever could!

We’re so excited about this, and hope you will be, too!

Okay everybody, quiet down and take your seats… welcome to the first day of class! My name is Mrs. Papadimitriou and I will be your teacher today! Our first subject for September will be about effectively using journaling on your layouts. I know, some of you may be moaning right now because the mere thought of trying to commit meaningful words to paper is a daunting perhaps intimidating task. No fear. We are going to take baby steps until you feel more confident in your ability to record your special moments.

Our first lesson will be to journal with a list. Remember, not all layouts need a novel to convey an emotion or explain an event. And let’s face it, sometimes you may not feel like journaling, but still want to put ‘something’ down! A list can be a fun way to record your memories without the fuss about what to say.

Here’s a page I created called ‘A Bad Day’. Based on the photo I thought it would be beneficial to use a list to instantly convey the overall emotion I wanted to create. Not all moments have to be happy ones. It’s important to document all the important events when creating memory albums – the good and the bad.

I still added a novel journaling to the page describing what happened at the hospital, but the list was a dramatic way of introducing the event.
My next layout ‘Meltdown’ showcases a progression of my daughter’s tantrums (gee, you know, I DO scrapbook happy moments too!). Using a list with checkmarks was a visual, pleasing way to add journaling and instantly get the message across without using too many words.

Easy peasy right? Are you feeling a little less anxious now? Well, if not here are a few more examples from some of our peers to get the juices flowing…
Shannon gives us a very in-depth look into her life by creating a list of who she is with her ‘Me @ 25’ layout.

Kym’s fun layout lets the reader know why they had the ‘Best Day Ever’ by giving us eight highlights of the day.

Here is another by Shannon called ‘10 Things I Love About You‘ and at first glance it appears to have a lot of journaling. But if you actually read it you realize she has made a list – a sentence for each – of the 10 things she loves about her daughter.

Okay, so let’s recap. A list can be a very effective journaling tool in the following ways:
* It effectively tells a story without overwhelming the page with words
* It is pleasing to the eye and allows you to create a unique look to your page
* It becomes a perfect solution to those who tend to leave blank spots with the ‘intention’ of writing something (guilty!)
* It highlights and summarizes our favourite moments

Okay, well our time is up for today. Your homework assignment is to try using a list on a future layout! I’m sure you’ll find it can be a great tool for effective journaling! I hope you found this helpful!

Red River Paper Co. Review

If you're looking for some great quality glossy and matte photo paper I just recently tried out a sample pack from Red River Papers. Here is my review below:

I thought I would try out the photo paper from Red River Paper company while completing a hybrid layout recently.

I needed three 4x6 photos and chose the 53 lb Premium Gloss photo paper. The nice thing about this paper is it is compatible with any dye based printer so it worked well with my HP.

The first thing I noticed was the paper was thick and sturdy. I liked that it was glossy, but not too shiny.
It went through my printer with no issues and the finished photo quality was fabulous - even better than some of the 'big' photo companies I've gotten prints from. There was no smudging and the ink dried very quickly.

Here is my finished product. As you can see the photos turned out great. I would definitely choose photo paper from this company again for any future scrapbooking.

Rainy Day Play

It was raining yesterday so Isla and I thought it would be fun to use our side walk chalk on our porch, since it was similar to the side walks. She thought it was pretty 'cool' to be able to write on porch without getting in trouble (lol)...

I created this simple page by taking a picture of our doodles/chalk and used it as a background. Then I added some fun elements from Echo Park!

Lookie' what I made!

Isla has a new play table! I don't do many DIY projects but this one looked so easy, I had to give it a try! So I made her a cute little chalk board table this weekend and I'm gonna share it with you. The original idea came from another blog: if you want to check it out - it's fabulous!

So here is a photo of the before table. It's the LATT table and two chairs from Ikea. It the best part is it only cost $25 for the set!

And here's the after! I spray painted the table and chair pieces with Auqa Satin Rust-olium spay paint and let dry. I then applied some chalkboard paint (from Home Depot) to the table top and let dry overnight. I assembled all the pieces and covered a couple of foam squares to make little pillow tops and voila! An adorable table set for under $50

Hopefully Isla will get some use out of it for many years to come!

I have tons of chalkboard paint left over for future projects, so I decided to paint the panels of my kitchen cupboards as well so I can write random thoughts, grocery lists or love notes to hubby. :)

I enjoyed those months but I'm having such a blast with her now, I guess that is why they are flying by! She has a little personality now and will actually engage with the camera, which is awesome for my scrapbooking! ;)

I saw this album template set called Feelings Signs Album from Splendid Fiins and I immediately thought that was an awesome idea for Isla! What a better way to explore and learn her feelings than to see her own face expressing them! It was a super easy project too - just pop in the photos into the template! A New Playroom!

Because we have two big dogs who have no regard for Isla's safety (if she's in their way look out!), we decided to create a big playroom in our living room. So we took our couches out (we weren't really using them anyway) and added a bunch of playmats, a tent, tunnel and toys! Secured with two extra large baby gates - and voila - a new play space! She loves it - but the dogs - not so much. After all, we took away their bed! lol... I thought it would be fun to do a page on it to remember it.

I've been doing a lot of scrapbooking these last few weeks (and it's been wonderful)! So I just wanted to share a few layouts I did recently! The first two are from Jessica Sprague!

The first one is from the Kitchy Digitals line Curated. It comes with album quick pages and layered templates that make it easy to scrap! I thought it would be cute to scrap Isla playing in the bathtub.

This one uses Liv.e Designs - her new Heart Doodles v2 are so fun! I blew mine up to create chaos in the background. She always gives me 'the look' when she's had enough of the camera. I call it 'camera rage' lol.

I love Karen Funk's new Cluster Frames and Word Strips! I thought I was neglecting my pups and figured it was time to do a page or two on them again. I started with my big baby Ryley. Isn't he sweet!?

I'm finally getting around to scrapping Christmas day! Isla had a blast ripping open the gifts, and she has brought back the excitement to Christmas day again! Template by ITM Designs.

This next one is a fun layout. I'll admit I saw these cute little fruit elements from Kitchy Digitals and needed to play with them! :)

I was inspired by Jennifer H. when created this layout. I love the clean and simple look to this page and the Calendar Masks by Carina Gardiner make this super easy! I plan to make one for each month to separate the layouts in my next album.

This last one is of my daughter on Christmas day. She just looks so sweet and innocent, I had to scrap it. I used Karen Funk's Remember When flower multiple times to create a heart embellishment!

My Little Picaso

Last summer Isla went to a baby class where they had fun finger painting on a canvas. She had no interest in it except to smear it all over her legs and clothes. :) Now that she's a bit older she had a better aim at the canvas and loved squishing the paint with her fingers. However she still tried to eat the paint too! Either way she had a blast. I thought these Wax Paint Splatters from Jessica Sprague were the perfect elements for this layout!

... to do much of anything. She's just getting over a cold so she's pretty sensitive right now. I bought these cute little antlers at the dollar store today with visions of adorable photos of her wearing them. So I put them on her head but she wanted NO part of it... I kept trying (bad mom I know) and this was what I got (served me right). Oh well... it's reality right? And it turns out I love the photos anyway. Maybe next year I'll get a different face... :)

I have to say I think the taped "Washi" frame from Kitchy Digitals really made the layout. I love the look of tapes right now! Credits

Cosmo Cricket yummies!

Here are a few layouts I did this week using Cosmo Cricket from Jessica Sprague!

Since Bob's dad passed away in 1979, I've noticed there are not a lot of photos of him. So I thought this layout was important to document his time here - even though it was short lived. It's the only one of him with his three children together (that I know of).

The next one is of my little love bug... I loved this photo even though it was considered a 'bad' photo because she wasn't all in the photo. Well, I say who cares! :) If the photo is important to you, scrap it anyway!

Here are a few pages I did recently - one for fall and Christmas! :)

I love Isla's fall coat! I wish I had one for myself! lol. She is obsessed with leaves, so I thought it would be fun to take a little walk in the park. We didn't walk far before she spotted some crunchy leaves and plopped herself down in the grass! I used the Nutmeg Collection from Cosmo Cricket because they were the perfect colours for my photos!

I also finished one of Isla's first Christmas last year. I saw Elle's Photo Cards and thought they would make a perfect template for my layout! I can't believe how small Isla was! It's so easy to forget and hard to believe how much they grow in a year!

Yes, I earned it last week when Isla decided to eat DOG FOOD! YIKES! She was cruising around the kitchen and I heard the clinking of the dog bowls. Usually they are empty and she likes to use them as shoes :)... so I didn't think much about it and went ahead with lunch prep. I guess Finnegan decided he didn't want his food this morning and left it there for Isla to discover! A few minutes later I look up and discover this...

My hubby surprised me with a Olympus DSLR camera a few days ago! I am so excited but also a little overwhelmed of how much I have to learn from it! I'm used to a point and shoot so this is a whole new world of f-stops and ISO's... shutter speed... oh, I'm so lost.

So I was fiddling around with the settings the other day (I think I need to take Candace's Oh Shoot class when it comes out!) and I captured a cute photo of Isla. I loved the way it turned out but it had this annoying shadow at the bottom from the lens cap! But I was able to use it to my advantage when I saw the newest and greatest from Splendid Fiins at Jessica Sprague!

Just wanted to share my newest layout! I got this outfit from a friend but I had already purchased a Halloween costume. My dilema turned into an opportunity when I thought why not just play dress up!? She had a blast walking around as a little (adorable!) dragon! :)

Here is my layout of that day. Isn't she cute! I love Jessica's Template +3 because it had a large photo and a bunch of spots to put little ones or patterns. I also thought the patterned colours from the July Paper Collection were a perfect match!

I have some fabulous news to share! I've been asked to be a Creative Team member for Jessica Sprague! I did a little happy dance when I found out! With the amount of amazing talent in that gallery I feel so honored to be asked to create for them.

So here is my first creative team layout for them! I loved Elle's Studio "Hour by Hour" lists and immediately thought it would be perfect to use it for Isla's birthday party! Everything went wrong that day but in the end it was all worth it because Isla had a wonderful time! :)
I thought it would be fun to use the list to write down the happenings of the day. I also used Elle's Pennant Banner alphabet too as it complements the party theme!

Design House Digital is full of Halloween goodness as of late! I'm starting to get in the 'fall' mood now that the leaves are changing and everywhere I turn there is pumpkins and costumes! I guess it's time to dig out my decorations!

So for fun I thought I would do a couple of Halloween layouts. The first one is of me dressed up as a witch (complete with purple eye lashes! :) during a Halloween party my hubby and I hosted a few years ago. It was my first party so I went all out and decorated the house with scary skeletons, graves and eyeballs!

This page was SUPER easy as it was created from Karen Funk's yummy Bewitching Template. The nice thing about this template was I could change/delete elements if I needed to. Next time I may even use this same template and switch the papers/elements but keep the main square design! The possibilities are endless!

I love my little one. She's the light of my life. My everything.

But she's killing my Scrapbooking mojo!

It's 9:30 pm and I'm trying to get those creative juices flowing during these precious few hours I have to myself. I've got my munchies beside me, the 'oldies' playing in the background (yes, I like oldies, kay!) and my PSE open and waiting for me to play. But she has decided mommy doesn't deserve any fun time tonight because she's been up in her crib these last two hours babbling and screaming for me!

Maybe it's because she is teething? Maybe it's because she got a new toy today and doesn't want to stop playing with it? I dunno, but I think I'm gonna have to forget the scrapping tonight... just not working for me. I keep staring at the computer screen (between going upstairs to sooth her every five minutes) and staring at the template. Nothing has moved or been added in the last 30 minutes. It's like I'm waiting for the scrapbook page to complete itself! Now THAT would be nice. But alas not going to happen.

Oh, great... now Finnegan (my younger and very clingy chocolate lab) has decided to put his head in my lap and stare (and drool) at me, trying to get my attention too. Apparently he's bored of sleeping all day long and NOW wants some lovin...

... And now I hear a pacifier being flung against the wall... lol... guess it's time to go up again!

Template Love

I've been traditionally scrapping since 2000 but a few years ago I wanted to try digital.

But I never did up until recently.

It seemed too intimidating and something completely out of my reach! So even though I had Photoshop Elements to play with it seemed too complicated, so just put it all on the backburner. I stayed interested but it wasn't until a friend showed me how the layers worked that something 'clicked'!

Then when my daughter Isla was born last year I didn't have the time to pull out my supplies. I started to browse digital sites and discovered the world of templates! I realized these were great page starters - I could just clip my photos and papers without the intimidation of designing the layout myself! At the time I didn't really understand how do do much else, so these were perfect!

Templates are so versitile and easy to use! 'Quick pages' mean that everything is done for you and all you have to do is clip your photo in the empty spot! Layered templates are ones that you can manipulate and move around as you need. Either are nice when you want to get a page done quickly!

Here are a couple that are from Design House Digital. These two pages are from Karen Funk Designs and the fabulous thing about them is they can be either a quick page or layered!

The above one is a template from Karen Funk's Remember When line (coming out tomorrow). All I did was put my photo in and add a title (on the left). I shrunk the whole thing a little smaller and voila! Done! It took me all of 10 minutes! BTW, these are my cousins little furry babies. Aren't they cute!?

The next one I used another one of her templates from the Color My World line, but this time I changed the background paper and added some word art. Although I could change things on this layered template as needed, the main foundation was already done so it only took me 30 mins! Awesome! (oh, and that is six-year-old me with that cheesy smile!:)

A blog? Really? What the heck will I talk about? Who's gonna want to read my babble?

I never thought I would be a blog person, and to be honest I have NO idea what to write about, but what it comes down to is it doesn't really matter! This blog is for me! It's an account of my thoughts and feelings about random things in my life. It's a way to connect to other SAHM's and fellow scrapbookers!

If friends and family want to read it, great! If not, no biggie. I think this is going to be a fun adventure! A place for me to reflect, post my favourite layouts and sites for others to be inspired, and talk about being a mom - and all the ups and downs of it!
